The $800 Hertz charged me was for the damage I did to the rental car. Because I'd waived Hertz's collision insurance when I rented the car, saying I had my own insurance provided by AmEx, it was then up to me to get that $800 back from American Express. That part wasn't a surprise.

What I was surprised by was the fact that Hertz had its own insurance to cover the damage I did to the other guy--standard liability insurance. I think other car companies may not provide this, and may require you to buy it from them? This is the part I'm still not totally clear on. But as I say in the post, some other car rental agencies have a note saying insurance is required, and I think liability insurance is what they're talking about. Because no credit card provides liability coverage AFAIK, only collision damage to the car itself.

In my experience, credit card companies only cover fire, theft and collision, never liability. Hertz indicated that they covered their car, and by extension, you, for liability, since they paid. What I don't understand is the $800 charge. Why did they charge your card if they said you were covered by their liability policy?
I am planning a trip in late July, and may rent a car. I would like to get some firm info on insurance coverage(all the things I have read say you must buy it, but your experience seems to suggest differently), if it is included in a company's rental, if so, what the limits are, and what it covers. Any ideas on where to get this info, and any other general tips on car rental in the Yucatan?
Thank you
